Kwame Kilpatrick was charged and convicted of ONE (1) bribery count. The conviction was for a check written by his co-defendant Bobby Ferguson to the Kilpatrick Civic Fund for a Fundraising event. A variety of checks from many different Detroit businesses and business owners were written for the same event.
But Ferguson’s check was somehow the only one that was a bribe.
Here is the other distinct and interesting thing about this ONE Bribery count…IT WAS NEVER MENTIONED AT TRIAL. The government lawyers never raised the issue during the trial, nor presented any witnesses or testimony about it whatsoever.
Nonetheless, the jury found Kwame guilty of the charge.
There were No “Bribes” …only this one very peculiar bribery count of conviction.
